Astronomy and Mapping Stars :

Math is used when astronomers are mapping out star systems and planets. The proper coordinates must be used in order to place them on a map. This is painstaking work that must be done very slowly. Because stars will move over time, die, or disappear from view, astronomers must constantly check the same piece of sky over and over to record new activity. This work can take a long time and is never completed fully. Astronomers will communicate with each other when a new star or planet has been discovered. They will use math to find the coordinates so that they can study it and given their professional opinion.

Mapping stars is another way to find planets that are just beginning or those that were hiding for hundreds of years. Astronomers will refer to older maps from time to time to see what has changed over the years. This is why it is important to be as accurate as possible when writing down coordinates. Number can be easily confused after working for a long time. By using math, astronomers have invented machines that can record coordinates easily and do not get tired or lose their place. While this system is not perfect, it does help when trying to find new star or when watching one die. Astronomers spend hours and hours watching the sky change slightly over the years. It can be very time consuming and solitary career. Many astronomers also teach so that they can be around people. Math is used in these classes and is expected to be learned.
